Symposium on the Notion of Volunteer Work and its Positive Effects on Society

Print
The symposium which was held on the 24th of March at the School of Dentistry focused on the notion of volunteer work and the positive effects it has on the life of the individual and society.  Mr. Duraid Laham, the famous Syrian actor, said that volunteering means that people give from their spare time, efforts and abilities in order to serve society and those in need. Moreover, while volunteering does not provide material wealth, it does gives meaning to our lives. He also said that volunteering is like a social stimulant which grows in strength over time, until all members of society are convinced that volunteerism is a social duty. Yet unfortunately, according to Laham, a volunteerism is in danger in Syrian society. A culture of volunteerism is brought about when there is a collective social demand for such, said Laham. He asserted the need for the existence of a framework and avenues through which volunteer work can be undertaken in order to serve society and its future generations. Laham, presented an overview of his term as ambassador of goodwill to the United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF and the steps undertaken during that period, working towards developing volunteer activities which serve the needs of children. In turn, he invited students and professors participating in the symposium to broaden their base of volunteer work to include various fields of work within the community. Saying that building a culture of volunteerism springs forth from individual efforts which in communion, affect the society as a whole.
