The british architect Richard Rogers delivered in 24/5/2010 a lecture at the Civil Engineering Faculty / Damascus University, shedding light on means of achieving urban and architectural development sustainability in compact cities.

Rogers reviewed experiences of a number of world cities in the creativity of building designs and the well-studied planning which undertake social responsibility through offering high-quality services to the society in all fields.

Talking about the city of Copenhagen and its urban design which based on the relationship between building, place and space, Rogers pointed to the necessity of achieving the conception of the environment-friendly, complementary and integrated city in all densely-populated cities which could be achieved through the following: mixing old and modern urban elements, establishing a good public transport network, concentrating on exterior designs of the buildings to encourage people and tourists to walk instead of using other transport means in order to reduce the emissions of gases.

Rogers added that designing Copenhagen has made it a civilized city, allowing 30 percent of its inhabitants to go to public places, riding bicycles, public busses or on foot. In this context, Rogers refers the beauty of the design of Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris especially the longitudinal shape and the general space which considered as a horizontal extension of the building. This design offers people an interesting chance to see through the stairs in 3 D.

On the other hand, he said that the charter of work in architecture is part of the social responsibility entrusted to the architects through the payment of taxes and provide society with general business and help charities, as well as focus on the quality of life in cities, pointing in this regard to the need to take advantage of the revolution of information and techniques such as the internet to communicate and learn and benefit from the cultures of other countries.

Rogers mentioned that in 2050, the population of the world is expected to be at 80% while 100 years ago it was only (10%), and that we must encourage walking and public transport in designing compact and densely-populated cities with multiple advantages.

In a presentation about Florence city experience, Prof. Rogers stressed on increasing the green areas inside and outside cities in the completion of regulatory schemes, as well as taking advantages of the empty and unused places within the cities in geometric way suits enjoyment, in addition to use the renewable energy sources to reduce environmental pollution.Rogers gave a presentation about the British city of Manchester which was the centre of the industrial revolution 250 years ago of which some parts were developed recently that 4 out of 5 buildings were removed and rebuilt. He also mentioned that there are some issues related to climate changes that we don’t have so much time to overcome their bad consequences on our planet, adding that 75% of the global pollution is caused by buildings and transport which requires us to use the renewable clean energies like solar and winds.

He believed that the main objective we must work for is to reduce carbon dioxide by 80% by the year 2050, indicating that biological systems over millions of years deteriorate due to desertification and deforest.Later on, he gave a presentation about air conditioning systems used in the building of Wales Parliament which depended on the methods of ventilation and how to achieve energy efficiency, saying that there is an important message in the building of the British Parliament that how things are run for the issuance of the environmental legislations.Rogers also figured out that it is very important to know how to deal with heat, cold, and weather in the process of designing the buildings, in addition to the need for efficient use of technology, principles of flexibility, and the issue of the environmental sustainability.

He also pointed to the necessity of using various colors in the buildings to fit with the outer perimeter, gives the location a very special sense of joy which makes visitors spend more time in such places as well as recognizing them by colors not by names.

Lord Rogers is considered among the most famous modern architectures all over the world, as he designed the famous George Pompidou Center in Paris, and the building of Loyd in London, also participated in designing the Dom of the Millennium in Britain. And he was the senior Advisor of urban to the Mayors of London and Barcelona. In 2006, his engineering staff was chosen to design the third tower in the new World Trade Center in New York. Rogers was granted many awards and developed more than 100 recommendations to guide the architectures of future cities

Prof. Dr. Wael Mualla, president of Damascus University, hoped that Rogers’ visit to Syria will be a good opportunity to benefit from his vast experience in urban development and sustainable development of our cities, especially that Syria is experiencing a comprehensive development and a great awareness of the importance of urban planning and development. This lecture was attended by ministers of higher education, housing and construction, local administration, presidential affairs, environmental affairs, the secretary of Al-BAATH party branch at DU, and governors of Homs, Qunaytera, Daraa, and a number of professors and students.
