Third Meeting of (NARS) comittee for the Basic Sciences in Higher Education

The National National Academic Reference Standards  (NARS) Committee for the Basic Sciences held its third meeting on June 5th 2010, in the Rida Said Conference Center at Damascus University with the goal of developing basic topics to be discussed by the concerned parties in the meetings on basic sciences that will be held between June 16th and 19th 2010.

 

The Committee completed the first step of the action plan in the form of a working paper prepared by the representatives of different specializations in order to define the different fields and occupations of graduates of the specialization and analyze the current reality of the situation for graduates from Syrian universities and their ability to meet the requirements of the workforce and local and regional markets.

 

Based on documented information, as a part of the second step, meetings will be organized for the concerned parties in the specializations of math, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, with the participation of all benefiting sectors of society as well as faculty members and students. 

 

Members of the committee have agreed that the topics shall be limited to questions posed to the representatives of the concerned parties in four fields of study and scientific research and their ability to address the requirements of social and economic development in Syria, as well as strengths and weaknesses of the graduates of departments of basic sciences from Syrian universities, ways to link the university with the community, and the role of the Faculty of Basic Sciences in developing the character of the student. 

 

The results of these meetings will then be evaluated and common characteristics will be extracted in a meeting with an international expert specializing in setting references for the basic sciences, to be held from July 7th to 8th 2010.  It is expected that the committee will complete its task of developing a final document for national academic refrence for basic sciences in August 2010.
