Directorate of Scientific Research at Damascus University

The university is considered the main stronghold for the development of scientific research, because of its role in producing knowledge through scientific research that contributes to achieving comprehensive and sustainable development. True scientific research is a national asset and a great national wealth, and the key to development and the path to advancement.

 

Scientific research is one of the university's main tasks and its highest priority, which prompted it to find regulatory bodies responsible for managing and supporting scientific research, carrying out its objectives and duties. In this context, and based on the provisions of the Universities Organization Law No. 6 of 2006, the Directorate of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies was established, which is administratively linked to the Vice President of the University for Scientific Research and Postgraduate Studies.

Administrative structure of the Directorate of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies:

Dr. Warqouzaq explained that the Directorate consists of the Department of Scientific Research and its committees, the Department of Scientific Publishing and Electronic Libraries, and the Department of Creativity, Invention and Technology Transfer. Each department includes many divisions and offices that work to ensure the optimal functioning of the Directorate.

 

 

Strategic goals 2026:

Dr. Warqouzaq said that the directorate set its strategic vision until the year 2026 according to the following goals:

●       Achieve the University’s mission with scientific research in accordance with its approved quality programs.

●       Raise the research capabilities of faculty members and postgraduate students.

●       Solve technical problems facing various government sectors

●       Strengthening team spirit and encouraging collective research

●       Focus on applied research that serves the community and solves local problems.

●       Develop scientific research units in accordance with the research plans of departments in colleges and higher institutes, and following up on their activities and evaluating their performance.

Operational goals 2024:

As for operational objectives, Dr. Warqouzq said that the Directorate is working to achieve the following:

Investing in the university’s available capabilities, including infrastructure and human cadre, in the service of scientific research.

Expanding and activating local and international cooperation agreements.

Activating the database of research carried out at the university.

Establishing joint research projects with local scientific and industrial institutions.

Scientific research in 2023:

The number of teaching staff members in the faculties of Damascus University, its technical institutes, and higher institutes reached 1,415 teaching staff members: 506 professors, 468 assistant professors, and 720 teachers.

The number of educational staff members reached 907: 149 internally delegated members, 158 externally delegated members, and 557 technical staff members.

The number of registered graduate research papers was 1,317 in 2023, distributed as follows:

426 postgraduate studies with a budget of 16,563,000 Syrian pounds.

608 master’s studies with a budget of 352,218,980 Syrian pounds.

283 doctoral studies with a budget of 396,113,500 Syrian pounds.

692 master’s studies, and the balance ratio between registered and completed research was 1.13.

275 doctoral research, and the balance ratio between registered and completed research was 0.97.

Regarding the guides completed, Dr. confirmed. Dr. Raqouzaq said that the Directorate has come a long way and completed all the guides of scientific research and postgraduate studies:

Guide to writing master's theses and doctoral theses.

Guide to registration procedures and public discussions.

Medical research ethics.

Postgraduate research arbitration forms.

Description of scientific research units.

International publishing awards request form.

Faculty research forms.

Graduate student research forms.

 

External publishing:

Dr. Warqouzq said that the total number of scientific publications in the year 2023 reached 500 scientific publications, distributed in global databases and in internationally classified journals according to the following:

D1: More than 40 scientific publications.

Q1: More than 70 scientific publications.

Q2: More than 140 scientific publications.

Q3: More than 150 scientific publications.

Q4: More than 55 scientific publications.

 

Cooperation and networking:

Dr. Warqouzaq said that the university has cooperated with a number of international and local institutions to accomplish some research, and the university is working to expand and strengthen this cooperation, so that it is optimal and reflects the position of the university, its students, and its professors.
