The Syrian Cultural Garden in Cleveland, USA is a testament to the creativity of the students of the Faculty of Architecture at Damascus University

In 2009, a competition to design the Syrian Cultural Garden in Cleveland, Ohio, was launched. The garden was part of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, which comprised 30 other gardens representing 30 different countries. The design includes the most significant features of the Syrian history and culture, ancient and modern.

The project’s idea is basically based on linking the design of the garden with the expression of the Syrian identity and cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, so that it represents Syria and what successive Syrian civilizations have provided throughout the ages. The project was completed in 2011, and the garden was opened as part of the Cleveland cultural gardens.

The winning project was published in Engineering Innovations Magazine. The Faculty of Architecture and the Committee Representing the Syrian Community in Cleveland honored the top three projects with certificates of appreciation, and the first-place winners received a cash prize.

The garden is distinguished for containing the most important elements of Syrian heritage: the Arc of Triumph (Palmyra), Bosra Amphitheatre, Ugarit alphabet, cuneiform, hieroglyphics and Arabic calligraphy, geometric and floral decorations, stone writings, in addition to the statue of the great Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani.
