UN Spanish Language Day is observed by the Department of Spanish at the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences

 

In the presence of the Vice President of Damascus University for Scientific Affairs, professors and students, as well as ambassadors and representatives of Spanish-speaking countries, the Spanish Language Department of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, Damascus University, commemorated UN Spanish Language Day.

 

Professor Dr. Maysaa Al-Syoufi, the Vice President of Damascus University for Scientific Affairs, emphasised the significance of UN Spanish Language Day in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, particularly since the Spanish Language Department was one of the departments impacted by the crisis in Syria and the absence of teachers who left their jobs during the crisis. She clarified that the department relies on the embassies of friendly countries to make up for the professor shortage by providing lectures, meetings, and professors.

 

In a statement to reporters, Luis Mariano Fernandez Rodriguez, the Republic of Cuba's Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador in Damascus, emphasised the significance of taking part in the event to highlight the Spanish language's role as a medium for cross-cultural communication.

 

As with other Spanish-speaking country embassies, Argentine Ambassador Sebastian Zavala emphasised the value of celebrating Spanish Language Day in collaboration with the University of Damascus and emphasised the language's role as a medium of communication.

 

For her part, the head of the Spanish Language Department noted that the embassies of Spanish-speaking nations were present at the celebration to encourage people to learn Spanish, which is now the second most common language in the world. She stated that in order to resume work, which was put on hold years ago owing to a staffing shortage, the department is attempting to address the current shortfall.
