With a production capacity of up to 4 cubic meters of gas per day, the bio-fermenter project is launched at the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering

Biogas production technology is one of the clean, renewable, and environmentally friendly energies as it transforms organic waste into a source of energy and organic fertilizers. In addition, it has a role in solving waste problems and reducing environmental pollution.

Within this framework and based on its interest in promoting sustainable agriculture, the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering at Damascus University worked on a project to produce biogas from digesters “bio-fermenter” at the Faculty, which is considered a pioneering model of partnership between the academic sector and Arab and international organizations.

On this topic, Dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Afraa Salloum, explained that the opening of the bio-fermenter is the result of cooperation with ACSAD. It aims to train students and carry out scientific research that will develop sustainable agricultural development.

Renewable energy expert at ACSAD, Engineer Tawfiq Khwais, said that the technology of biogas production treats waste. Burning methane is considered useful, in addition to benefiting from it in cooking and electricity generation, heating, and other fuel uses.

Khwais added: This technology also produces a fertilizer that is beneficial to plants and the land, as it is rich in organic matter and major and minor growth elements. In an optimal way, it treats sewage, garbage, and waste from food factories.

Scientific supervisor of the bio-fermenter, engineer Dima Deeb, explained that using biogas fertilizer technology and applying it through fertilization experiments allow knowing its effect in improving the soil’s physical, chemical and fertility properties and increasing its wheat productivity
